SCAF offers dog and cat microchipping for only $25, which is the cost we pay, as a public service. Microchip clinics are held at selected events including our annual Raise the “Woof” Animal Walk every June. There is no limit to the number of pets in a household that can be microchipped through SCAF.
Our microchips are purchased from Merck, a pharmaceutical company, and we utilize HomeAgain Pet Recovery Services for microchip registration.
The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected under the skin of the animal’s back at the shoulders. After the microchipping, SCAF registers the microchip’s unique ID number with the HomeAgain database. If your pet is lost, a scanner, usually at a shelter or a vet clinic, reads the chip information. Your pet’s ID can be traced via the database so the shelter or vet can contact you.
HomeAgain‘s call center is open 24/7, 365 days a year. You will receive an invitation to sign onto their website to add a description and photograph of your pet to more accurately validate the identification. Your $25 registration fee covers standard services from Home Again. It never expires for the life of your pet and there are no other fees for this basic service. The $25 microchip registration fee is payable to SCAF at the time of service.
